Vented Summer Chaps
Vented Summer Motorcycle Chaps
Summer riding is when many riders leave their chaps at home, and when their legs need protection just as much. Sun, engine heat and road debris don't take the summer off. Chaps Fit summer chaps are built to stay wearable in the heat: vented leather that lets air through, open backs, snap-on legs that come off quickly at stops, and utility pockets. They're sized 2XS to 8XL.
Why Wear Chaps in Summer?
- Engine and exhaust heat: in slow traffic, a hot engine and pipes can bake your inner legs, especially your right leg on most cruisers. Leather keeps that heat off your jeans and skin.
- Sun: hours of direct sun on your thighs are tiring and can burn through thin fabric. Leather shades your legs.
- Debris: summer brings bugs, gravel on the road and loose stones from road works. It all hits your legs first.
- Abrasion: leather resists scraping far better than denim, in summer as much as winter.
How Vented Chaps Keep You Cooler
- Vents let moving air pass through the leather over your thighs, carrying away heat and sweat.
- The open back means the seat and back of your legs are never covered, so heat escapes.
- No thermal lining. Summer chaps skip the insulation that winter chaps use to trap heat.
- Quick-off closures like snaps and buckles let you take your chaps off in seconds when you stop in the heat.
Our Breathable Vented Leather Chaps Designed for Summer Rides combine all of these: genuine cowhide with breathable vents, dual front buckles, a rear adjustment belt, side utility pockets, snap leg closures and reinforced knee panels. Check each product page in this collection for its vent and lining details.
When the Air Is Hotter Than You Are
Here's a point many riders don't know. When the air temperature climbs past your skin temperature, somewhere in the mid-90s °F, moving air stops cooling you and starts heating you. On very hot days, covering your skin can actually feel cooler than leaving it bare.
In that kind of heat:
- Hydrate before and during the ride. Heat exhaustion can come on without warning.
- Wear a cooling vest or neck wrap under your jacket.
- Plan stops in the shade and take your chaps off while you rest.
- Ride early or late to avoid the hottest part of the day.
Choosing Summer Chaps
- Vents or no lining? Vented chaps give the most airflow. Unlined solid leather chaps are the next-coolest option.
- Color: black absorbs the most sun. Brown or lighter leathers stay cooler in direct sun.
- Closures: snaps and buckles are quicker to undo at every stop than full-length zippers.
- Pockets: in summer you may ride without a jacket, so leg pockets matter more for your phone and keys.
- Fit: snug enough not to flap, loose enough that air can move. Don't size down in summer.
For cold weather, see our winter lined chaps. For all styles, browse motorcycle chaps.
Summer Care: Sweat and Sun
- Sweat: salt from sweat stiffens leather and leaves white marks. After hot rides, wipe the inside and outside with a damp cloth.
- Drying: let chaps air-dry in the shade. Never leave leather baking in a car trunk or in direct sun.
- Conditioning: summer heat dries leather faster than winter, so condition it more often during riding season.
- Bugs: clean off bug splatter the same day, before the heat bakes it on.
